Okay… yesterday… I got an email from my editor over at Samhain about Nice Girls Do.
It sold!
Totally.happy.about.that.
BUT - she said in her email she was going to “beat me up” on edits. LOL I’m totally okay with that, only because I know the version I sent her was very raw. I’m almost embarassed to admit that. It was practically a first draft.
That makes… FOUR books I’ve now sold.
Nice Girls Do is the second in the Coffee House Chronicles. It follows Talk Dirty To Me (still available at Samhain!) and is the second in the trilogy.
And so why can I not write these days? I don’t know. Still in that year-end funk I guess. The holidays depress me and I don’t know why. It’s been like this for the last few years. Maybe because I’ve never been truly happy in my adult life.
Who knows.
Anyway… I went to lunch with Best Good Friend yesterday (and she related her waxing debacle to me - you can read about that here). I had this gift card for Chili’s so we went and stuffed ourselves - I had the chicken tacos and they were DELISH. So on the way back to the office, characters suddenly started speaking in my head. And they were naughty. Very naughty. I spewed forth about three pages later that day and the working title is Rules of Play. I’d like to have a manuscript ready for Kensington’s Aphrodisia line, but I don’t know if the story is 70,000 words worth or even if I can write it hot enough. I just don’t know.
And so I decided as I mulled this over that I’m having growing pains as a writer. I don’t exactly know what genre I’m best suited for. I’m struggling with the fantasy romance - and my ultimate dream is to write fantasy. However, I seem to be an okay romantica writer. I won’t call myself an erotica writer because I just don’t write that “hot”, if that makes sense. Historical involves so much research and I’m too impatient for that. I want to get right to the story. Time travel - well, that sort of falls into the realm of historical, doesn’t it? Especially if the characters are going back in time. Ransom & Fortune was so easy for me to write and I wonder why that was? Because I was writing every night? Because I was on deadline? Maybe. Quite possibly.
So… last night I washed my face, waxed my eyebrows and drank a glass of wine as I pondered all of this. And I’m still wondering… where do I fit on the bookshelf? Either ebook or brick & mortar?
(And why is it my damn mouse never works right after my child has played on the computer?)
Ah well. I just need more time to think about it. And maybe I’ll just keep on dabbling with Rules of Play. Never know what that could bring, right?
