Get Your Murder On…
What an Effing Beating…
April 19, 2007
Hey I’m blogging over at Chicas today about Murder at the Book Signing. Hop on over for your chance to WIN a free ticket to the game on Saturday! WOO!
So.
Main Street Arts Festival is in full swing in downtown Fort Worth. What this means is…they close off Main Street for four days for this arts thing-a-ma-bob. I’ve never been. I have no desire to go.
So. Since it’s the Arts Festival, it makes traffic a nightmare getting into and out of downtown every day. Joy, oh, joy.
Guess who works in downtown? Yeah. Me.
Guess who also have the drive into downtown where EVERYONE and their mother has to slow down and look at the tornado damage from Friday’s storm?
Yeah. Me.
So. I’m leaving work yesterday a tad after 5 and because traffic is bad, I figure I’d go a different way. What a mistake that was. I ended up driving through downtown for freaking 25 minutes - normally a 5 minute jaunt to the highway! It’s because the road I chose was cluttered with - guess - Arts Festival traffic. Oh, yeah, and freaking construction.
Sheesh.
Forty five minutes later, I finally get to the sitter. And the baby boy is crying with an earache. A wail almost. I feel awful for him. So I pack him up and take him to the clinic - which is actually his doctor’s office but they have late hours. I waited about 30 minutes to even get in to see a doctor and there were only two folks ahead of me.
Turns out the baby has ear wax shoved all the way down the canal. And now they want to flush his ear. THAT was an experience, let me tell you. He did okay for the first five or six squirts, then after that it was NO WAY, NO HOW. The doctor came back, took a look, and then used a metal rod thingie (don’t you love the medical terminology? I should have been a transcriptionist) to clean out the ear. That poor baby’s ear was beat red.
It was 7:30 by the time I left there, prescriptions in hand. Off to Walgreen’s and they tell me it’s 15-20 minutes.
I drop off the Rx and, since I was out of cat food, it was on to Wal-Mart. Plus I was out of apple juice and that’s a staple in the household when the baby is here. Then, since we hadn’t had dinner and it was too late to cook (and dangit I was going to make chicken fried steak), I stopped at McDonald’s. Back to Walgreen’s.
It’ll be another 5 minutes before it’s filled. DAMMIT. I’m so tired by now. My feet hurt (thank God for flats), my legs ache, and I was just ready to be home. Then, as I’m waiting for them to call me, this big, fat white trash BITCH gets up to the counter, parks her effing basket in the middle of the Earth, and then her POS white trash kids are running amok.
So. They call my name, I get up to the counter and this POS doesn’t even bother to MOVE HER EFFING SHIT. She stands RIGHT in front of the register at the counter and never moves an effing muscle, all the while I’m trying to pay and get the hell out of there. I was so annoyed by this. Stupid bitch.
I finally got home, ate dinner, unloaded the car, fed the cat, scooped the cat box, did the dishes, and then it was time to give the kid his meds. And that was a fight. So help me I wanted to fall on a sword. I was totally at my wits end by this time.
So I did what any parent would do. I bribed. “If you take your medicine, you can have a cookie and then play you Gameboy for a few minutes before bed.”
It worked. Of course, he made faces and complained the entire time he took both meds - one for the ear and one for the congestion. But, thankfully, he got it all down.
I missed most of LOST so stayed up late and watched it.
Then I passed completely out in the bed.
And no. I got NO writing done. GRR
What Does Your Sleeping Position Say About You?
April 18, 2007
What Your Sleeping Position Says |
You have a passion for everything - including sleeping. Outgoing and brash, you tend to still shock those who know you well. You tend to be selfish. You are the most likely type to hog the covers. You gravitate toward comfort and don’t like extreme situations. |
What Does Your Sleeping Position Say About You?
I made some progress yesterday with Revision Hell. Thanks to some brainstorming with some writer pals, I came up with a new idea…which in turn calls for yet MORE rewriting.
I really have got to stop doing that. However, I keep telling myself it’s for the greater good - the book! Especially with that awesome cover. I can’t NOT rewrite.
In other news…my bookmarks arrived yesterday! A lot earlier than I had anticipated and I’m super happy about that. I also received the BeautiControl facial wash stuff I had ordered on Saturday. I love getting presents on my front porch. It makes me happy.
I’ve been struggling with my fatigue lately. That late night on Sunday is really kicking my ass and I’m trying to catch up (even though it was totally worth stay up until 2 am…).
Anyway. The Sweetie Boy is with me this week. This morning, we had a conversation about fiction and non-fiction. He knows the difference. He told me that cartoon with talking animals and Veggie Tales were all fiction because it was real. So I asked him what it was called if it WAS real and he told me it was called non-fiction.
So, we’re in the car on the way to school, and I tell him that Mommy writes fiction books. It was like the lightbulb went on. “Ohhhhhhhhhh,” he says. “Is A Bend In Time a fiction book, Mom?”
“Yes,” I said and I’m grinning ear-to-ear because he knows the name of my book. That’s my boy!
He pauses. Then says, “Is A Break In Time a fiction book, Mom?”
My gaw. I’m stunned. “YES!”
This just goes to show you that little tykes are way more perceptive than we adults give them credit for. I’m surprised and pleased he knows his mom writes fiction books. Now, we won’t discuss was SORT of fiction books until he’s…oh…45 years old. HAHA
Then this evening, when the bookmarks arrived, I opened them up. He decided he wanted one, so I gave it to him. He reads the top: A girl… a hit man… and a time machine. “Mom?” he says. “What’s does time machine mean?”
So I tell him it’s a time travel, meaning they have a machine that takes them backwards and forwards in time. He thinks about this for a second and then he grins and says, “I wish I could do that.”
SO DO I!
If I could pick any time period to visit, it would definitely have to be the Middle Ages. I am fascinated by knights in shining armor, kings, queens, courts, castles, jousts, ladies-in-waiting, medieval wear, and everything else associated with the time period.
If you could pick ONE time period to visit, what would it be and why?
Once Upon A Time…
April 17, 2007
…there was a writer than never plotted. She was a total “pantser” and never knew what her story was or what her characters were going to do. Then one day, she sold a book and its sequel. And realized that the sequel totally sucked and had to be rewritten.
So she lamented this to her critique partners and friends and as she went through the rewriting process, she discovered she really really really needed to learn to plot. So she signed herself up for two workshops (both of which are in May).
In the meantime, she sweated, bled, and cried over the book in Revision Hell. And her dear sweet crit partners were all there to help her figure out what the hell she was doing.
And along the way…she got a really kick ass plot and discovered something else.
There are really three books.
Such is the way of things. In my revision of this book I’m working on - and after a rousing brainstorming session - I have come to the decision that there are in fact THREE Ransom & Fortune books when there used to be only two. How did this happen? I’ll tell you how.
It’s because I don’t effing PLOT a thing. Ever!
That will all change. I’m taking Shelley Bradley’s Storyboarding class next month as well as Mary Buckham’s Plotting with the Mythic Structure. I’m starting to get the internalization and stuff down, now I need to learn to plot and bloody stick to it. This revision of this book is absolutely driving me to the brink of insanity.
These are the first craft workshops I’ve taken in a very long time. I just haven’t had the time, drive, or desire to really sit down and take a workshop. Now is the time. And I have decided it’s time to totally embrace the Writer in me and effing DO IT. No more jacking around, no more excuses. None of that.
Hi. My name is Michelle. And I’m a pantser.
I guess admitting you have a problem is the first step. Right? ![]()
Quick Entry
April 16, 2007
Not much time to blog this morning, so I’ll try to make this quick.
The Stars lost in OT to the Canucks, making the series 2-1 Canucks. I hope they manage to win the next one or we’re in trouble.
I got a lot done this weekend. Got all the contest entries back to the entrants. What a load off my mind! I’m so glad I don’t have to worry about that anymore and I can really focus now on other stuff. I worked on the edits Sunday too and got a big section done. Then I laid around the rest of the day. I think my brain and my body were telling me to shut down and just relax. So I watched all sorts of TV which I usually don’t do.
I watched the recap show of Grey’s Anatomy and the second episode of The Tudors (haven’t watched the 3rd yet, though). Americas Funniest Videos was on while I cooked dinner - a lovely chicken in a lemon sauce. It was delish. I continued to lay on the couch for Desperate Housewives and Brothers & Sisters. By the time it was over, The Man was calling me.
On my DVR to be watched: the 3rd episode of The Tudors and the pilot episode of Painkiller Jane
I feel recharged and rested today. The first time in a very long time, so apparently I needed a lazy afternoon and evening.
The baby boy will be with me all week as his dad is out of town. Which means I get the balancing act once again. But it’s all good. I just wish Monday hadn’t come so damn quick.

Which Sex and the City Vixen Are You?
Aftermath
April 14, 2007
We had some seriously bad storms through here last night. Since I have a great boss, she told us to go home early because of them so I did. I got to the house shortly after 5 and then the storms kicked in.
A tornado hit an area that is right on my drive home - Haltom City. Not a bad tornado, probably just an F1, but STILL. I am SO glad I was already home and not driving in it.
I got golf ball size hail here at the house (and again, I’m so relieved I park in my garage). My car was fine. But hearing that hail hit the roof and the windows and the garage door… it sounded awful. My ex-in-laws, though, got baseball size hail (and they don’t live but about 10 minutes away). Their cars suffered a lot of damage.
It was so strange, too, with this storm. I was watching it roll through on one of the local stations. It was windy when I got home, but about 30 minutes later, it got dead calm. No wind. No nothing. I grabbed my cell phone, my thumb drive (because I was NOT going to lose all my hard work - haha) and a flashlight and slipped on my shoes, ready to dive into the bathtub. The sky got really really black and then it just started to dump the hail. And the wind kicked up. Very gusty and very scary.
Anyway - I was lucky I suppose. Others were not so lucky. A couple of houses were demolished in Haltom City. There was an RV dealer they showed on the news afterward - the RV were scattered around as if they were toys.
Today - it’s windy and about 50 degrees here. BRR. And I was just getting used to that 70 degree weather again.
I have RWA this morning and then this afternoon, I have a lot of work to do.
Happy Saturday!
