Inkwell Guest: Sharon Buchbinder on Obsession

Hi, everyone! Today I have Sharon Buchbinder on the blog! She’s answering questions and talking about her latest, OBSESSION. Stick around – there’s a giveaway!

Obsession_w7616_Full ResolutionHi Sharon! Thanks for joining us today on the Inkwell. You have a new book coming out –

Thanks so much for having me here, Michelle!

OBSESSION, a paranormal romantic suspense! Can you give us a blurb for that?

A desperate mother…
A Mexican drug lord…
A dangerous match.

A year after a barbaric childbirth, complete with a near-death experience and an encounter with her guardian angel, Angie Edmonds is just happy she and her son, Jake, are alive. She’s finally in a good place: clean, sober, and employed as a defense attorney. But at the end of a long work day, she finds herself in a parent’s worst nightmare: Jake has been kidnapped and taken across the Mexican border by a cult leader who believes the child is the “Chosen One.”

Stymied by the US and Mexican legal systems, Angie is forced to ask the head of a Mexican crime syndicate for help. Much to her chagrin, she must work with Alejandro Torres, a dangerously attractive criminal and the drug lord’s right-hand man. Little does she know Alejandro is an undercover federal agent, equally terrified of blowing his cover—and falling in love with her.

What made you want to write this story?

I have been fascinated by good versus evil and the supernatural since childhood. As a child, I wondered why so called “good” people could be so mean to me, and so called “bad” people could be so nice to me? I also wondered why there seemed to be so little justice in my world. Where were the angels when I needed them? As I grew older, I realized there are gradations of good and evil in the real world and in well-written fiction. A villain may love his family; a hero may have a fatal flaw. Even religious leaders can go off the rails, as we’ve seen in the past decade with the revelations of church scandals and cults that kill. Now we receive more in-depth coverage of these so-called “good” people and their failings on a daily basis. On the other hand, our news coverage of gang bangers and cartel bosses is one dimensional. I’m not defending the murders and violence, but I had to ask myself, if I grew up in that world, who and what would I be? Like many authors, my story grew out of “What if?” I put myself in the shoes of the people in the story and added a paranormal element to satisfy my need for justice. That symmetry gives readers what I hope is a satisfying ending.

What do you find appealing about writing paranormal romantic suspense?

I have always loved a good mystery, starting with Nancy Drew. The suspense pulled me in at every page, along with the romance with her boyfriend, Ned. In addition, paranormal events have played a role in my life since childhood. I have always accepted this alternate reality that many others do not experience or recognize. Their disbelief doesn’t dismiss my psychic experiences: dreams that come true, that I think of someone–and that person calls, and that I knew my sister was pregnant before she did. In the 1970’s while a psychology major at the University of Connecticut, I participated in telepathy experiments using the now famous J.B. Rhine Zener cards and other images. My “hit rate” as a receiver was statistically greater than chance occurrence.  Curiosity and pragmatism took me down the paths of psychology (BA), neuroscience (MA in Psychology), Nursing (AAS) and finally, public health (PhD).

I like to write about the tension between the scientific and paranormal worlds. For many years, outside the realms of science fiction, horror and paranormal romance, it was felt that science, religion and the paranormal couldn’t coexist–much less cross into each other’s territories. However, Jeffrey Kripal, a highly regarded author who holds the J. Newton Rayzor Chair in Philosophy and Religious Thought at Rice University, where he is also the Chair of the Department of Religious Studies, recently published Authors of the Impossible: The Paranormal and the Sacred. This in-depth examination of four major figures, Frederic Myers, Charles Fort, Jacques Vallee and Bertrand Méheust,  researches the links between religious experiences and paranormal reports. Kripal’s scholarship provides a solid foundation and gives other serious scholars permission to explore these intriguing relationships outside the realm of fiction.

Why do you think readers will identify with your heroine, Angie Edmonds?

Angie had a horrible childhood. Her father, a cult leader, was abusive, as was her mother. She overcame that childhood with education and became an attorney, only to fall victim to the disease of addiction. When she finds out she’s pregnant with Jake, she gets clean and sober. Angie turns her life around and becomes the model mother—and then her worst nightmare happens: Jake is kidnapped by her crazy father and abducted to his fortress in the Sierra Madre. She has worked hard, done everything right, things are at last good in her life and the bottom falls out. Every parent with a pulse can relate to the rage Angie feels, her desire to rescue her son, and her fury demanding revenge.

What did you like best about your hero, Alejandro?

Let’s start with the hotness and go from there. The cover doesn’t do this man justice. Romance trading cards are winging their way to me, and let me tell you, he is caliente! In addition to his (ahem) physical attributes, he has a heart. A big one. His ATFE handler has no clue Alejandro’s nephew was murdered and his step-brother maimed by the very cartel Alejandro has infiltrated. Like Angie, his fury is also demanding revenge. He can’t resist Angie because her wound reflects his. He calls it “the mother card.” However, if he falls for her, his cover could be blown—and he could be the next headless body in the Chihuahua desert.

What is your favorite genre to read?

Paranormal romantic suspense, of course! LOL! One of my favorite books of all time, my desert island book is The Eight by Katherine Neville. That book has it all: mystery, romance, suspense, conspiracy, a story that starts in the French Revolution and continues in contemporary times, and a supernatural chess board from King Charlemagne that could destroy the world if all the pieces come together. Whoa and hey, she had me at hello. I’ve read that book at least eight times. When I met her at a Mystery Writers of America conference, I had a horrible fan girl panic attack. She is an incredibly gracious lady.

When you’re not writing, do you enjoy any hobbies?

Fishing! My Facebook page is full of fishing pictures and videos. I know, sounds crazy, right? Fishing is hours of relaxation, interspersed with moments of sheer adrenaline. I carry a note pad and pen with me when I fish. Some of my best story ideas have occurred to me while holding a fishing pole in the Florida sun. Lest your readers worry, we fish with a captain who is an ardent conservationist, as are we. We catch and release.

What other exciting stories to you have upcoming for lucky readers?

I’m currently working on Kiss of the Virgin Queen, another paranormal romantic suspense, which is the story of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba and the impact of their epic romance on their descendant, Homeland Security Special Agent Eliana Solomon, the Jinn Hunter. There are actually two stories in this book. Inspired by the structure of The Eight, I structured the story with chapters alternating between Biblical times (the 10th century BCE) and the present. I’ve been researching this book for three years, across four major religions. It’s my magnum opus, if you will. I’m at 30,000 words, with 60,000 left to go!

SBB_Sandman Bookstore Headshot 3About Sharon:

After working in health care delivery for years, Sharon Buchbinder became an association executive, a health care researcher, and an academic in higher education. She had it all–a terrific, supportive husband, an amazing son and a wonderful job. But that itch to write (some call it an obsession) kept beckoning her to “come on back” to writing fiction. When not attempting to make students, colleagues, and babies laugh, she can be found herding cats, waiting on a large gray dog, fishing, dining with good friends, or writing. Today I’m talking about my baking disaster that I had over the holidays. Every year, I like to bake and give away goodies to family members. This year was no exception. I made four kinds of cookies, a pound cake, an apple pie and what was supposed to be peppermint bark.

I have this wonderful recipe that is SUPER easy to make. But I was low on white chocolate. So off to the store I went. I couldn’t find the Ghirardelli baking squares like I already had. Instead, I bought white chocolate chips. I figured that would be easier to melt than the baking squares anyway. But I needed 12 oz and the bag was only 11 oz. They also had peppermint bark baking squares and I thought I’d give that a try.

That weekend, I went to make the bark. The chips melted beautifully. When I added the peppermint bark baking squares–which had regular chocolate on the backside–it turned the melted chocolate from a lovely winter white to, um, well…poop colored. I decided to go with it anyway.

My other problem was I didn’t have any parchment paper. I used wax paper instead. I poured out the melted chocolate that looked like poop and sprinkled on the crushed peppermints. It looked awful. I let is sit overnight but it never hardened like it was supposed to. So I had a soft gooey mess on my hands. I threw the entire batch in the trash, sadly. My sister suggested I should put it in bags and call it Snowman Poop. LOL I may have done that if I hadn’t tossed it all already. Plus it didn’t break like bark should.

So here’s your tip: Don’t use wax paper! And don’t use anything other than white chocolate. Trust me on this. ;)

Here is my recipe for white chocolate peppermint bark:

Melt 12 ounces finely chopped white chocolate in the microwave, stirring every 30 seconds. Stir in 1 tablespoon melted shortening and 4 ounces chopped white chocolate until smooth. Spread on parchment paper-lined baked sheet and sprinkle with 1 cup chopped peppermint candies. Let harden; break into pieces.

So tell me: do you have any baking disasters you want to share? Today I’m giving away one of my Coffee House books, winner’s choice, to a commenter.

And tomorrow hop on over to see Karilyn Bentley’s blog post for more fun and games!

She wasn’t meant for movie stars, Hollywood, or happy endings. And then she met him.

Happy Endings are for fairy tales. Or the movies. Not for real life. At least, not in Claire’s life. Even though she’s starting over, she knows better than to want too much this time. But when she falls, literally, into the strong arms of Hollywood’s ‘it’ boy Josh Wiley, Claire’s in for some surprises. Her plans for rest and relaxation are forgotten as one incredible night with Josh becomes two… And her heart begins to want him as much as her body. Will two kids, one bastard ex-husband, and Josh’s juggernaut career mean the end of their affair? Or can Claire find her happy ending after all?

About Sasha Summers

Sasha is part gypsy. Her passions have always been storytelling, Hollywood, history, and travel. It’s no surprise that her books include a little of each. Her first play, ‘Greek Gods and Goddesses’ was written for her Girl Scout troupe. She’s been writing ever since. She loves getting lost in the worlds and characters she creates; even if she frequently forgets to run the dishwasher or wash socks when she’s doing so. Luckily, her four brilliant children and hero-inspiring hubby are super understanding and supportive.

Altered DestinyCelebrating a Writing Job Well Done

Good morning! Thanks for having me visit today.

My co-author, Linda Wisdom, and I have just finished a second round of edits on our interactive adult paranormal story for Coliloquy – Great Escapes: Summer Solstice. So in celebration I just treated myself to a Dove Dark Chocolate mini. You can’t go wrong with chocolate, right?

That’s what I always tell my hubby…even though he says he can think of several things better than chocolate. He usually tells me this while he’s waggling his eyebrows up and down in one of the world’s most comical leers. I keep him around for that kind of comic relief…and for reaching things on the top shelf since he’s a good bit taller than I am but that’s another story.

That comic relief helps keep me from yanking my hair out when I’m writing and the words aren’t coming or the scene isn’t working or my brain just isn’t functioning. A lot of people think writing is easy. “Hard work? Really? I mean…you just sit in front of a computer and type, right?”

Well, yes, but it has to make sense logically and emotionally. It has to form images that touch the reader, that make her heart race with fear, passion or happiness. It has to create an aura of dread or a sense of victory. It has to leave a reader with a feeling of satisfaction when she’s finished reading.

HeartstoneThat kind of writing can leave an author wrung out because those emotions have to come from somewhere. They can’t come out of a vacuum so they can only come from the author herself. When she’s finished, she needs that comical wag of eyebrow and with its accompanying leer from her significant other because it reminds her there is life after writing.

Because of that and the fact that he vacuums when I ask him to, I might just share my dark chocolate candy with him. And I’ll waggle my eyebrows up and down too.

Oh, I’d like to offer one copy of Great Escapes – Valentine’s Day to one lucky commenter. All you need to do is leave a comment WITH your email addy by July 28. I’ll have my furry muse/writing partner, Wookie, pick the winner. She loves doing that, lol.

Thanks again for letting me visit.

Uncorrected EXCERPT from Great Escapes – Summer Solstice

She woke, body still vibrating from tiny aftershocks of an orgasm that had practically turned her inside out. At least she thought she was awake. Could someone really dream an orgasm that powerful?

The moon sent long fingers of silvery light shimmering across her bed, tracing her dream seducer in a ghostly, otherworld glow.

I knew you would be that responsive.

Her breath seized. Before she could even think, she leapt out of bed and raced to the door. She ripped it open, a scream bubbling up her throat.

The man walking out of his room next door stared at her, his gray eyes wide in startlement as she dashed through the door. A small shopping bag dropped to the floor; he caught her in his arms. His gaze flicked toward the dark room, then returned to her. “Uh.”

It was much worse than just getting caught stark naked. She was stark naked in a stranger’s arms.

A stranger whose effort not to look at her pale flesh was valiant but failing.

She backed up, covered herself with her hands and looked over her shoulder at her room. “There’s someone in there. I was asleep. He was… but then… I saw him. Through him. But I could feel him. And—”

She suddenly realized how she sounded. Even worse if she said anything about what happened with the sexy male ghost. Any minute now, someone would show up with a straightjacket and she’d happily go with them.

Super Agent meets Super Hero. He can save the world, but can she save him?

Heroine is on a mission to stop her own government from building an army of clones. The only problem is this FBI agent’s on probation. No badge, no gun, no partner. Taking matters into her own hands, she goes undercover as a runway model during New York’s Fashion Week, and finds she can’t keep her eyes off the shoes or the sexy Armani-suit-wearing man who’s in a bit of trouble himself. She trips, breaks a heel, and falls face first…into his lap. Not only does she stumble onto one of the sexiest and most eligible bachelors in New York, she also stumbles onto one of the biggest undercover jobs of her career.

Hero is the typical New York bachelor on the surface, but he has a secret only one other person knows about. He and his buddy, a microbiologist, have discovered a cure for cancer-and it all lies in Hero’s genetic code. The mutation gives him the ability to regenerate quickly, giving him immortality. His secret, however, doesn’t remain a secret for long when his buddy is murdered in cold blood and the killers are now after him, intent on stealing the research-and his DNA-to build their own dark immortal army.

And the only one who can help him comes in a five-foot-ten package labeled Sex Goddess: Keep Out.

Today’s Guest: Devon Ellington

hex-breaker-cover-thumbnailBack in August, my good friend, Devon, joined me here for an interview (click the link to read the entire interview). She had just released her adventure, Hex Breaker. Now, she’s working on the follow-up adventures with her characters Jain and Wyatt. Below is an excerpt of her first interview as well as some more information about the coming release in the series. AND! Because the book is so awesome, I’m giving away a copy of Hex Breaker. Just leave a comment and your name will be tossed in the hat for the giveaway. All comments must be posted by midnight CST and winners will be emailed and announced on tomorrow’s blog.

Tell us a little about the book [Hex Breaker].
Hex Breaker Jain Lazarus joins the crew of a cursed film, hoping to put to rest what was stirred up before more people die and the film is lost. Tough, practical Detective Wyatt East becomes her unlikely ally and lover on an adventure fighting zombies, ceremonial magicians, the town wife-beater, the messenger of the gods, and their own pasts. Hey, it’s always more fun when they have dark pasts, isn’t it?

Will there be more adventures with these characters?
Yes. I should have a short story available for free download soon. The second story in the series, tentatively titled OLD-FASHIONED DETECTIVE WORK, is told through Wyatt’s eyes, and is almost finished. The third will be told through Billy Root’s point of view and is set in Scotland. Gee, now there’s a surprise, right? Something of mine set in Scotland – again!

ofdw_thumbTell us a little bit about the books following Hex Breaker. What adventures can readers expect to see with these characters?

Ooh, you want me to give things away? ;)

OLD-FASHIONED DETECTIVE WORK, the book set to release this spring, is told from Wyatt’s point of view, which should please Wyatt’s legions of fans! Jain disappears after a romantic weekend with Wyatt, and he’s the main suspect in her disappearance, complicated by the fact that the manager of the inn insists Wyatt and Jain left in the morning, but only Wyatt returned. The paranormal organization with whom Jain works hires Wyatt to track Jain, and he winds up in the middle of a shapeshifter controversy, saddled with a young, rebellious paranormal-couple-in-training, mermaids, and dragons as he uses his very pragmatic skills to track Jain down.

There’s an excerpt of the new book here and excerpts from HEX BREAKER and the two tie-in short stories.

The third book, which I’m currently writing, is mostly told through Billy Root’s eyes. He was a secondary character in HEX BREAKER, but so popular that he warrants his own book. Most chapters are told from his point of view; a few are from Jain’s. The book takes place in Scotland (with a few chapters in Iceland), and the whole second half of the book takes place at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, in which I’ve had two plays produced over the years. So we go back to some of the behind-the-scenes theatre stuff, the way there’s a lot of behind-the-scenes film stuff in HEX BREAKER. I think Billy’s journey will surprise a lot of people, but also really please the ones who fell in love with him in HEX BREAKER. He keeps surprising me in the best possible way.

The fourth book will focus on an escaped killer who’s out for revenge on Wyatt, who put him away; the fifth book is behind-the-scenes on a singer’s concert tour, and the sixth (and right now final) book of the series has to do with a journey to the Underworld, bringing back a couple of characters with whom readers first became acquainted during HEX BREAKER.

While each book stands alone, there’s also an overall character arc for Jain and Wyatt, revealing their pasts and how that shapes their futures. They both have some pretty dark areas in their pasts, and more layers of that are revealed in each book. I’m also committed to breaking the false assumption that once two characters have formed a solid, passionate relationship, they’re boring. Their passion for each other is one of their deepest strengths, and they don’t need to sabotage each other. While they don’t always agree, they’re also not deliberately trying to undermine each other in the name of “love”. They can hash things out and move forward more strongly than before.

Okay I spaced and forgot I was doing this today. Well, I didn’t really forget, I just misplaced the reminder in my head that I was doing this today. LOL
