Inkwell Guest: #Paranormal #Romance Author Deborah Palumbo

Hi Michelle, I want to thank you for this wonderful opportunity. I’m really glad to be here with you and your followers. I hope to be friends, keep in touch and return the favor!! In fact, when you release your fantasy romance on December 13, you’ll have to come by my blog!!

Well, what can I say to capture the attention of your audience? Hum? We’ll let me start with the more recent news and then digress.

I’m the author of the paranormal romance series THE UNDEPARTED and seven other novels.

I’m a self-pubbed author spinning yarns in two genres available in ebook and paperback on amazon. ….historical and paranormal laced with mystery and sometime spice…. and Mystery/crime; you know, who dunnit with frustrated detectives who are hot on the trail of some killer.

I also co-wrote a screenplay with the acclaimed actor/writer Jordan Rhodes. www.jordanrhodes.com

I was honored to have caught Jordan’s attention with my mystery crime novel EDGE OF DARKNESS, hence his invitation to co write with him. He wrote a review of me and my novel I’d love to share with you if you don’t mind a little bragging:

“Edge of darkness is a taut suspenseful Detective thriller laced with humor that reminds one of the wit displayed by the character of Lenny from Law & Order. It’s an interesting read that would easily translate to film as it conveys visuals to the reader. For every Mickey Spillane fan out there – Mickey’s back – only he’s a female and her name is Deborah Palumbo”…JORDAN RHODES Actor/writer

Of course, Jordan was being kind and there could never be another Mickey Spillane!!

I wish I could say that I write these tales of love and murder and mayhem behind an antique desk, but the fact is I write in my king bed with my pillows scrunched up behind me! I began this whole writing journey when I became bedridden and homebound. Talk about fate. I had always wanted to write novels, since I was a kid, but it took a period of long confinement to bring about that dream.

I started writing hot and heavy in the 90′s and it wasn’t until 2010 that I dusted off my files, edited and self published my work. I wrote extensively in 2011 and through this year, publishing 8 novels. The 9th novel will be out SOON. It is the 3rd book in my paranormal romance/mystery series The Undeparted. It’s called The Banished One.

It’s about a serial killer vampire who is on the loose and since he’s supernatural he can’t be captured, so Lieutenant Hamilton Welby follows the old town rumors about vampires right to Quentin Castle (the father of all vampires) to enlist his aid.

Now if you’re unfamiliar with The Undeparted series I should give you some background info.Quentin is a vampire in transition; he used to be Lucifer’s sidekick, but since falling in love with Cassandra he’s mellowed quite a bit, but his powers are still the strongest in the world.

Lucius was a mortal before Quentin sank his fangs into his neck. He tried to capture Quentin’s love Cassandra, but Quentin basically kicked his butt. Lucius is out for revenge and since he can’t beat the crap out of Quentin he takes his anger out on unsuspecting women. He beds them, bites them and kills them.

I’ve been told the series is quite original, breaking new ground; the vampires aren’t your typical cape wearing, can’t come out during the day vampires, nor do crosses make them cower or stakes kill them.

I hope that pique’s people’s interest! But just in case, I love to talk about my newest mystery novel, a 1948 crime noir with a vintage detective, Humphrey McAllister entitled When the Temperature Rises. I love to promote this book cos I really believe whole heartedly in it. I love Humph, but sadly he loves blonde dames, you know. Please click this link for a description from my blog.

When I’m not writing I enjoy relaxing at home; occasionally in front of the TV watching the old black and white shows or listening to 70′s music. I’d prefer to play cards or Scrabble rather than go to a club. I’d rather take a long drive on a country road than jet off somewhere. I love to cook for friends. Sometimes I pull out the good china and other times I use my favorite Hallmark paper plates, but what really matters is the laughter and good conversation and especially a discussion about a good book!

Oh yeah, I love cheeseburgers!

I had a blast with you, Michelle! Thank you so much for having me!

Inkwell Guest: YA Author, Lara Stauffer

Today, I’m very pleased to host my good friend/distant sister-of-the-heart, Lara Stauffer. She’s a debut author with her new release, Unearthed, an adventure for everyone of all ages. I had the good fortune of critiquing this for her and I can say it totally sucked me in. I loved, loved, loved this book. The way she weaves… okay, I’ll shut up now. Lara is here to tell us all about her new book.

Take it away, Lara!

Thanks for coming to the blog! I’m very excited to have you here with me today. :) This month is the release of your debut novel, UNEARTHED. Tell us about the book.

The book begins with 18-year old Matt Staubach, who reluctantly attends a dig with his archaeologist dad the summer before college. As they discover new artifacts, the story of Teom and his family is slowly revealed. Teom is a young man Matt’s age, who lived two thousand years before. The two lives of Matt and Teom, separated by time, eventually unfold in a parallel race for their spiritual and physical survival.

I love this story and how you weave it together. It’s really well done. What inspired you to write this type of novel?

I’ve always been fascinated with history, and I think we sometimes forget that people who lived long ago were just like us. (Plus I reeeally wanted to write a story about finding a lost city. I mean, who doesn’t want to write that?)

I admire those who can write effective YA. How did you manage to get into the POV of Matt so convincingly?

I thought to myself, if I were an 18-year old shallow, popular guy…just kidding. I actually knew someone very similar to Matt growing up (my lips are sealed on who) so I used my friend as a “template” for Matt’s thoughts and reactions. It was a bit of a challenge. Matt really isn’t one to have “deep thoughts.” But he’s a good guy at heart, and I hope I portrayed that effectively.

How do you think readers will relate to Matt?

He’s struggling with a lot of things. He’s struggling with his faith, he’s at odds with his dad, he’s about to leave home and go to college, which itself is a huge step. All of these things make him unsure of himself, and maybe even a little vulnerable. We’ve all felt like this at one time or another, and gone through the similar experiences.

When I was a kid, I wanted to be like Indiana Jones. :) Have you always been interested in archeology?

Absolutely! I was the weird kid who checked out the books about ancient Greece and Egypt from the school library, while all the other 4th-grade kids were reading chapter books. I remember telling anyone who would listen all about the ancient Egyptian mummification process in detail, including how they scooped the brain out through the nose! My friends thought digging up old stuff and learning about ancient civilizations was boring, but I was hooked!

What other writers inspire you?

An eclectic mix, for sure. Jane Austen (garden variety answer, I know, but she was AWESOME) Laura Ingalls Wilder, Roald Dahl, Guy de Maupassant, and Stephen King. Most recently, J.K. Rowling. Anyone who can tell a great story and suck me in, I’m theirs.

What other things are you working on?

I’m working on a YA fairy-tale of sorts, called THE POTION-MAKER’S DAUGHTER, and a YA Fantasy titled DORMANT. Both very different, but both a hoot to write.

If you weren’t a writer, what would you be?

A museum tour guide. :)

Inkwell Guest: Misty Evans on Ghosts

Hi, all!

Welcome to Day 4 of the birthday bash! Today I’m giving away a copy of my time-travel adventure, A Bend In Time, to one lucky commenter on today’s guest post.

Today I’m super pleased to have not only a terrific writer here but a good friend and critique partner, Misty Evans. She’s got a new book out, in case you’re wondering. And I can tell you it’s a fantastic read. It’s the second book in her Lost Worlds series. She’s here to talk about that and ghosts, so I hope you’ll stick around and post a comment. She’s also giving away a copy of her latest, so be sure and answer the question at the bottom of the post! If you don’t see your comment right away, fear not. I will release them from moderation as soon as I can.

Take it away, Misty!

I’m a big fan of ghost stories and movies. In my new release, Soul Protector, my heroine is a ghost whisperer. While researching real life ghost whisperers, I came across a lot of information on Mary Ann Winkowski. Mary Ann is the real life inspiration for the TV show “Ghost Whisperer”, the author of “When Ghosts Speak” and the co-author of “The Ice Cradle” and “The Book of Illumination.” She has worked with federal agencies as a paranormal investigator and even has a cookbook of ghostly recipes.

She’s a fascinating lady. In particular, I found an article she did for NextMovie.com pretty cool. The article is all about which movies get it right when it comes to earthbound spirits. You can read the full article here.

My favorite ghost movies are:

The Sixth Sense

Field of Dreams

Ghost

All three made Mary Ann’s list of “Close But Not Quite”. According to her, the two movies that were “Dead On” (pun intended, I think) were Stir of Echoes and Witchboard. I’ve never seen either movie, but I’m putting them both in my Netflix cart (for research purposes, of course!).

What is your favorite ghost movie? I’m giving one commenter a free copy of SOUL PROTECTOR or any of my backlist.

About Misty

Misty is currently at work on the next books in all her series. She likes her coffee black, her conspiracy stories juicy, and her wicked characters dressed in couture. Learn more and sign up for her newsletter at www.readmistyevans.com. Like her author page on Facebook or follow her on Twitter.

Soul Protector, Lost Worlds Series, Book 2

The secret to redemption lies in their souls.

Dr. Nathan Hunter has forty-eight hours to save his job and find the missing Salt Coast Clan, a lost civilization locals believe is a myth. When ancient human remains turn up at the site of a new state water project along the Oregon Coast, he’s sure the lost tribe is real. Before he can examine the bones, however, a pretty female lawyer gets an injunction to stop him.

Nila Willopah sees ghosts. After failing to help a young boy cross over to the afterlife seven years ago, she hung up her shaman’s cape, left her family, and went to college to pursue a law degree. Three days before the bar exam, she’s summoned home by her grandfather to defend a sacred burial ground from a billion dollar state water project.

Although her soul is in danger from the spirits unearthed at the site, Nila is the one person who can stop the project and protect her ancestors’ last resting place from Dr. Hunter. She’s also the only one who can help the angry spirits cross over.

Nila suspects the sexy anthropologist is hiding a dark secret behind his clear blue eyes and skilled hands. A secret she wants nothing to do with. But when one of the ghosts latches onto his soul, Nila must set aside her fears and suspicions and once again enter the world of spirit communication to protect him.

Even if saving his soul means sacrificing her own.
