Snippet Sunday for May 19, 2013

oneknightonly_msr

I know… I was doing “Six Sentence Sunday” but let’s face it. I’m just too verbose for that!

Here’s a little snippet from ONE KNIGHT ONLY, Book 1 in the Realm of Honor series:

Now that the adrenaline rush was over, Maggie thought she would collapse at any moment. Every muscle in her body felt as though it had turned to mush. Her hands still shook and her heart still stuttered in her chest. Once they were out of the lists, Geoffrey helped her down from the horse.

Elyne grasped her arm, holding her steady as she limped away from the lists. Her victory was short-lived, though.

“Sir Finian,” Lord Litonshire shouted in his nasal voice.

Maggie’s heart nearly stopped. Hadn’t she enough fear for one day? She turned to face him as he can running from the lists. “Crap.”

“Just what we need,” Elyne muttered.

“Can’t you use a Jedi mind trick on him?” Maggie asked.

“A what?”

“I suppose not.”

“Just don’t talk to him. I still have your glamour up.”

Before Maggie could ask how she was supposed to do that, Litonshire stopped in front of them. He looked her up and down, as though he didn’t believe the sight before his eyes.

“How did you do it?” he demanded.

Elyne placed her hand on Maggie’s arm as she shrugged.

“Sir Finian is feeling much better,” Elyne said.

The earl’s beady eyes swung from Maggie to Elyne and back again. “I thought you were too ill to ride.”

“He persevered, my lord,” Elyne answered.

“Not broken.” Maggie took her hand and patted it.

Six Sentence Sunday for April 22, 2012

Hi, everyone! Today I’m participating in Six Sentence Sunday! The following six sentences are from my Ellora’s Cave release, One Knight Only. Hope you enjoy it!

Maggie Chase gripped the steering wheel until her knuckles turned white as she navigated the tiny car through a torrential downpour. The windshield wipers swished back and forth at a speedy rate—which, due to the pouring buckets of rain, turned out to be not so speedy after all. Her bright lights reflected off the sheets of rain and she squinted, as if that would help her see through the dark deluge.

“Please, God,” she muttered under her breath. “Get me through this in one piece.”

She had resorted to verbal prayer instead of a silent one, hoping that God would hear her even though He hadn’t heard a word she’d pled over the last few harrowing hours.

He intends to find her kinsman and return her safely but he can’t resist her charms, her smart mouth or her sex appeal. Instead he keeps her close, taking her with him to an important jousting tournament—one he has to win or lose his castle forever.

Phoenix Fire

Kill, or be killed.

Elena Gaius is Hixyl’s most heralded gladiatrix, catching the Emperor’s eye with her unspoiled beauty and fiery temper. Determined to let no man have her, he forces her into a life of unwanted accolades—for slaughter in the Games. With independence out of reach, Elena knows each day could be her last.

Cassius Antonius is a former general hired by an underground secret order to assassinate the Emperor. When he refuses, they take away the only thing precious to him—his freedom. Forced into servitude, he meets Elena and manipulates her into helping him, forming a shaky alliance and a searing romance.

The two become unwitting pawns in the struggle to save Hixyl from the Emperor’s tyranny. But plans spin out of control with the discovery of their secret tryst, and for their ultimate act of betrayal, the Emperor demands one last entertainment—to be pitted against each other in the Games in a fight to the death.

I had a great editing experience and discovered that I had a serious exclamation point problem. Apparently, I love me some exclamation points when it came to this book. I guess there was a lot of emotion. ;)

So, to whet your appetite, here is a snippet from the book. One of my favorite scenes:

Elyne sat Maggie at the long table in the Great Hall, the very room she had fallen asleep in the night before. Or rather, six hundred plus years in her future. There were the two giant fireplaces on either side of the room, both featuring a cheerful fire. The wood table Maggie feasted upon was scarred from longtime use. Faded tapestries hung along the stone walls. Maggie smiled. Here she was in a working medieval castle and she longed for a pen and paper to write everything she saw, heard and smelled.

Her breakfast was a thick porridge in a bread bowl and various dried fruits. The servants who placed the meal in front of her stared at her with big round eyes and gave her a look that said she had no business there. Maggie wondered if Finn was notorious for having strange ladies in his keep and she was another one in a long line of bonnie lasses.

Elyne poured her a tankard of a pale liquid and slid it her direction. Sniffing the honey sweetness sent her stomach plummeting. She wasn’t fond of sweet drinks, especially early in the morning, and she wrinkled her nose.

“It’s mead.” Elyne rolled her eyes.

“I’d rather have a cup of coffee with cream.”

“I’m not a short-order cook. You better get used to it if you plan to survive here. I thought you knew about history?”

“I do. But I studied medieval literature. Not food and drink.” Maggie waved toward the feast in front of her.

Elyne snorted in response.

“I don’t understand why you can’t just snap your fingers and send me back,” Maggie said, taking a bit of the steamy porridge.

“It doesn’t work like that,” Elyne said, an edge of impatience creeping into her voice.

“How does it work then?” Maggie was truly interested. She’d never laid eyes on a Fae, much less a royal one, and she wanted to know more about her.

“That’s none of your concern.”

“It is my concern. You brought me here. Besides, I’m not all too sure you’re really Fae. Prove it to me.”

Elyne’s mouth pulled into a sour grin. “I don’t have to prove anything to you.”

Maggie shrugged. “Have it your way.”

The princess puffed out a short breath. “Fine, then. I’ll prove it to you.”

Elyne clenched her fists at her sides, her body shimmering in gold and silver hues while Maggie watched. Her blonde hair sparkled with an otherworldly light, making Maggie shriek and drop her food, shielding her eyes from the blinding brightness. But not before she spotted the distinct pointed tips of Elyne’s ears.

“This is my true form,” Elyne informed her. “But you humans cannot look upon us for very long.”

“Why not?”

“Because it’s like looking directly at the sun.”

Meaning, it would burn my eyeballs right out of their sockets. I get it.

“Turn it off.”

“Are you sure? Have I proven myself, then?”

“Yes, yes. Turn it off.”

Elyne’s image muted, the tips of her ears and the rest of her returning to normal, and a smirk appeared upon her face.

“All Fae wear a glamour to protect us from those who would harm us. Satisfied?”

Maggie nodded, clamping her open jaw shut. “I am, your highness. But you’re still coming with me.”

“Am I?” she asked, cocking her head in a sort of mocking way to one side.

“You are,” Maggie confirmed as though it fact. “And you’ll like it.”

“I agree it would not be proper for a lady to go without an escort, but—”

“Good, then it’s settled. I’ve never had a maidservant before. This should be fun.”

At Elyne’s grimace, Maggie flashed the brightest smile she could muster.

New Cover for One Knight Only

CHECK IT OUT! I’m so excited about my new cover. It’s not exactly how I pictured Finn, but ya know? Who’s to squabble over a hot guy wearing a kilt and holding a sword? Right? I adore the text in the book title. It’s purty. Yes, I said purty.

I’m working on edits now! YAY!

I’m terribly glad it’s Friday. This was an unbearably long, hot week. We’re about to break another record. If the forecast is right, we’ll have 60+ days of 100+ degree heat. I’m sick of summer. Have I mentioned that? Come on Fall!
