It’s A Living

So today I’m completing my first week at the new job. Hey,  it’s a living. ;) And it pays the bills. And fixes my stupid, flippin’ car.

Oh, I have so many things to say about that car. But I don’t have the energy to type it all out and I’m sure you don’t want to read the rant. Suffice to say that it is now at the dealer for the FOURTH time in two weeks. Now getting new motor mounts. I want to bang my head against the wall. Hopefully this is it. There will be no more repairs.

Anyone want to buy a Kia Spectra? :D I’m kidding. Sort of. Okay, not at all. I’m seriously considering selling the thing.

Since I’m back at work now, I’m back to writing on my regular schedule. Which is my lunch hour. But I wanted to try to get more words in during the day. Since I’m fried at night and do absolutely NO writing, I devised a plan to get up a little early and write. I don’t have to be at work until 8:30 which means I can drag my feet a little in the morning. I get up at 6 am and write for about 45 minutes. It usually takes me 15 minutes to get kickstarted. I’ve been averaging about 2000 words a day which is stellar for me. I’ve drafted the first three chapters of the third knight book. WOOT!

As with book two, I’ve been keeping a word tracker. I’ve found the cute little bar charts don’t really work for me. Instead, I want to see the numbers in black and white. Naturally, I keep a spreadsheet. I started the book on August 1 and have just busted the 16k mark. Not bad for half a months’ work, huh? This is only writing Monday through Friday, too, by the way. Last week, I wrote 5700 words. This week, I’m on track for about 7500 words. I won’t be writing at lunch today because it’s lunch day with the Man. I might get some words in this weekend but I never count on it since I have lots of stuff to do. Or not do as the case sometimes is. ;)

I love seeing these numbers climb. I love busting through another milestone (no pun intended). Now if I could just figure out the ending…

I’ll think about that tomorrow. Hope you all have a lovely weekend!

A Progress Report

Is this really the last week of March? I can’t believe how fast this year is already going.

My son is off to camp next week for five days on his big 5th grade field trip. The husband and I have been busy getting things together for him. We had to get him some new clothes and some gear – sleeping bad, duffel bag, rain poncho, flashlight. I think I have just about everything except for a few little miscellaneous things. When school first started, the camping trip seemed to far away and now here we are!

Which means, also, that school is nearly out. And then he will officially be in middle school. Egads.

We had a nice weekend. Friday night we had dinner at Don Pablo’s and then just hung around the house and didn’t do much of anything. The kiddo has been sick off and on for a few days with a mysterious virus that we can’t figure out. I think he’s finally come out of it. Thank goodness. I felt bad for him. Poor guy couldn’t keep anything on his stomach.

Saturday was about running some errands and then I went and hung out with the Plotting Princesses for our mini-retreat. And in case you missed it, I’m doing a new series over there called The Newbie’s Guide to Writing. The first post, Finish The Damn Book, went live last week. Check it out if you have a chance! Afterward, I hurried home so we could hit the 9 pm showing of The Hunger Games. We haven’t been to a late show in a long time (maybe not ever together) so we had a lot of fun standing in line with all the other people. We ate a large vat of popcorn. The movie was GREAT but I swear I cried like a baby during one part. Jennifer Lawrence was excellent as Katniss – that girl can act circles around the rest of the cast. I thoroughly enjoyed it. And, best of all, it followed the book quite closely. Always nice when a movie can do that.

Got home at midnight, drank some “nighty night” tea and then crashed. Sunday we did stuff around the house. Since we’d been busy the previous two weekends, it was in desperate need. We’d also gotten a fair amount of rain, so the yard needed a lot of TLC. The husband got busy mowing while I cleaned and did laundry. It took nearly all day for him (and me) but we got everything done. We made a run to Lowe’s – because that’s our normal Sunday afternoon shopping excursion during the spring/summer – and bought some rose bushes. I can’t wait to get them in the ground. In the next few weeks, I’m going to get more bedding plants, plus plant some herbs and flower seeds. Hopefully I will be able to grow them this year. Last year, the heat scorched everything. We grilled burgers and I made martinis – another Sunday afternoon tradition. :)

And I’m still writing. I’m currently working on Knight 2. I’m just over 83k and still writing. I hope to finish it this week or next and then comes the really hard part – editing.

Some of you may remember that I started the Dave Ramsey plan. I’m pleased to say I have completed Baby Step 1 and I’m currently working on Baby Step 2. By the end of this month, I will have paid off six credit cards, with four accounts left. All the biggies, but I’m fairly certain I can get it all done in the next 12-18 months. That’s the goal anyway. I feel good about it and I’m really starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. I can’t tell you what peace of mind it gives me knowing that most of this debt is no longer hanging like a big black cloud over my head. BUH-BYE debt!

And that’s about it for me. I hope everyone has a lovely week. Tuesday and Thursday I’ll have guests, so please come back and show ‘em some love, k?

Observations From The Peanut Gallery

UPDATE: Yesterday’s word count: 4130. Busted the 27k mark. I’m getting closer…

SO. Here’s something to ponder. I noticed the other night at basketball practice that Moms are the minority parent there. It’s mostly dads. I think I was the only mom there, tapping away on her Mini with her iPhone in her lap. Yeah, I looked cool doing it, too.

At soccer practice, not a dad in sight. Mostly moms. And you know what? We were all sitting in our respective cars. I was tappinga way on my Mini with my iPhone in my lap. Yeah. Looking cool doing it, too, but no one saw me there. However, I do love the fact that I’m getting so much writing done at these various practices.

Anway, I digress. Is soccer a “mom” sport and basketball a “dad” sport? Is soccer the suburban mom thing while basketball is the suburban dad thing? I’m just wondering if I’m alone in the observation.

And that’s all I got. It’s Friday. Thank goodness.

Have a smashing weekend ya’ll.

An update

Busy today and yesterday but I managed another 1000 words. Not as much as I would like but something! Tonight is soccer. You bet I’ll be sitting in the car with the Mini. I hit the 24K mark yesterday and hoping to get past 25k today. I’m determined.

A warrior never quits.

Making Progress

Man worked late last night so I sat and worked on the revision. I got 37 pages done! I have 80 pages to go! WOO! I love making progress.

Once I finish the revision, I want to start concentrating on working on the new book. I really want to get my hands into the futuristic and start plotting that story and writing up a good bare-boned synopsis. Besides, I miss working on new stuff. I miss the creative process and I really want to get back to that.

Still no word from the agent. But it hasn’t even been a month yet. LOL! Impatient? You bet.

Man has to work late again tonight. Guess where I’ll be? Yes. Chained to my computer working on the remaining 80 pages. It’s a great opportunity since the kiddo is at his dad’s this week. No distractions! (Don’t get me wrong – I love my child dearly but he’s very demanding of attention.)

And that’s about it for me. Not much going on in Michelle-World. It’s Tuesdsay – you know what that means? It’s taco night! Sweet.

Chapter 10…

…has been drafted and edited… Now on to Chapter 11.

And that’s all for today!
