She remembers every details… or does she?

“It seems as though it has been years since I have seen him, though in truth only a few days have passed. Even so, I remember his last kiss and how his lips felt as if it was yesterday. I can still feel his scruffy cheeks under my palms, see his face in my mind–ruggedly handsome with an inherent strength, bronzed by wind and sun. I remember every detail of the color of his eyes, so dark-blue and mysterious, that I could get lost in their striking depths.

Or do I really remember this? Is it my feeble mind playing tricks on me? Has my imagination conjured this man? Part of me says yes. If it was not for the gold button in the bureau drawer, I would not have believed he existed.

All he wanted was to live in peace with the woman he loved. But Doane would soon learn he would never be able to do that.

“My lady, there is a stranger at our door,” Eleanor said, her voice but a whisper.

Sharah turned from watching the downpour and gazed at her servant. The girl was only a scant years younger than she and had been her faithful attendant since the death of her father. She knew her well and was startled to see her tremble.

“Who is it, Eleanor?” she asked. “Is he fearsome? For you have a frightening look upon your face.”

“Oh no, my lady,” the girl breathed. “Fearsome is not the word I would choose.”

“Where is he then?” Sharah demanded.

“In the foyer, my lady, waiting to see the mistress of the manor.”

“Then I shall greet him.”
