Home Improvements

We got a lot done this weekend – namely some important home improvements. Our original plan to was demo the bathroom sink in the master and install a new one. Friday night was spent at Lowe’s (romantic, huh?) buying all the pieces and parts. It was an hour-long trip and $500. But, we got the new vanity with sink, new faucet, new light fixture and new mirror/medicine cabinet. We also got a new shelf for over the washer/dryer which had to be put together.

Saturday, though, was all about mowing. The backyard was nearly hip high thanks to all the rain we’d had. It took Man several hours and about 8 bags of grass total by the time he finished. Meanwhile, the kiddo and I ran some errands which included another trip back to Lowe’s. We’re a glutton for punishment. 🙂 I bought a book on plumbing and some paint because in our Friday night post-Lowe’s discussion, we decided the bathroom really needed to be painted too and since we were doing it…

I made a snap decision on wall color because I didn’t want to fret over it. I chose a nice neutral color called linen – it’s a light tan and I think it’ll go well in the bathroom with the current decor. Back at home, Man had finished mowing, showered and was ready for some food so we headed back out to Olive Garden and stuffed ourselves and then ended up at the mall which is ALWAYS dangerous. We bought a new quilt for winter and looked at furniture.

Back at home, we started putting together the storage cabinet for over the W/D area. It turns out, it took a lot longer than anticipated. Nearly 4 hours later, we had it up on the wall. It actually came out great and I’m very pleased with it. Yes, I know it’s not centered over the W/D but what you don’t see in the picture is the water heater which is just to the right of this. I cropped it out because it’s hideous. Someday, I’ll have a tankless water heater that won’t be an eye sore. 😉 (And for the record, I’m looking forward to getting rid of my old-school W/D and getting the new fancy front loaders with all the bells and whistles…someday they will be mine. Oh, yes, they will be mine!)

So this is what Man and I built and hung on the wall. I’m so loving this because it gives us the much needed storage space and it hides all the ugly laundry junk. All the necessary bottles of detergent, fabric softener, stain remover, etc.

Not that anyone will see it except for me and the Man… Eventually, I’ll paint the walls in the utility closet because they’re in desperate need of that.

By the time we finished this up, it was late and we were exhausted. The next order of business for Sunday was to sleep late. Which we did. 🙂 We’d decided the sink job would take more than a day so we’re putting it off until this weekend. It’s going to be a two-day job. Instead, I painted the doors that close off the utility closet. We’d replaced them a while ago (one? two years?) and I was lazy and never painted them. I figured I should do that now since I was in renovation mode.

It took several hours (again) but I like the result. Plus there’s nothing like having that freshly painted smell in the house. I’d post a picture but you can’t really tell a difference so there’s no real point.

Once that was done, we watched the Cowboys lose to the Bears and then grilled burgers and dogs. You’d think by this time of the year, it’d be getting cooler but NO. It’s still in the 90s and humid. It’s rather gross. I’m really looking forward to October when things get cooler, we plant new flowers for fall and I put all my fall stuff out on the front. I just can’t do it yet while it’s still hot.

I made zero progress on the writing this weekend but I did read through pages on Friday so that kinda-sorta counts as weekend writing. This week, I’ll be back to it. My deadline is looming.

And now it’s back to work. Monday are my least favorite day of the week.
