I’ve been a bit busy lately.
Okay, that’s a little white lie. I’ve just been tired. And lazy.
Yesterday morning, we got up and went to meet the inspector and the realtor at the house. Since he wasn’t finished yet, the baby boy and I went out in the backyard and I let him explore. He thought it was cool. He also thought the pond was very cool. Note to self: drain pond and fill with dirt and flowers ASAP. It’s not that I have anything against a pond, but well… I have a 5-year-old who likes to pick up VERY large rocks and throw in. Yeah, that’s a no. Anyway…
The realtor arrived and the three of us played kick-ball with a half-deflated ball my son found in the bushes. Leave it to a little one to find a ball in the yard, eh?
After the inspector finished, he explained to me everything he’d found. The house is in fairly good shape for being 34 years old (yes, it was built the same year I was born). He said the roof was in great shape and the AC/Heat unit looked very well maintained and I’d probably get a few more years out of it. Relief. However, the hot water heater will probably need to be replaced as well as the electrical panel because it was put in the same time the house was built and this particular type is notorious for causing house fires. Nice. Luckily, the ex is an electrician and I trust him on his judgement, so I’m going to have him take a look when he gets back in town. I’m sure it will need to be replaced, but money is an issue and it’ll just have to wait a bit. There are leaky sinks in each bathroom and the tub/shower diverter in the master doesn’t work right. The dishwasher is also busted.
*sigh*
It’s not a deal-breaker by no means and I should be thankful that it’s in as good of shape as it is. BUT… it does need work. There are serious maintenance issues with the vegetation around the house. There are carpenter ants in the front porch as well as termites in some discarded wood next to the house (thankfully, no termites IN the house). I’m going to have my hands full with some serious maintenance.
Actually, it’s okay. I’m looking forward to getting my hands on it and cleaning up around there. I’ve talked to my mother and she agreed to loan me her gardening tools to get it cleaned up.
We’ve finally gotten a cool front around here and the temp was in the low 70s when I was out and about earlier. I actually had my patio door open for a bit but the humidity rose and it was time to get the AC back on.
When we walked outside, even my son said, “Hey, it’s not hot out here!” It’s been cloudy most of the day, but no rain like they predicted. My hair dryer is close to death so I ran to Target and picked up a new one. I can’t live without a hair dryer.
We also went to Best Buy and I priced refrigerators and dishwashers. I have them all picked out and for a reasonable price. I’m really not interested in having a side-by-side simply because the freezer is so small and I really don’t care if it has ice and water in the door. So I picked out a decent fridge with the freezer on top. It’s got nice storage in the door of the fridge part – big enough for gallon jugs of milk or juice – and humidity controlled crisper. The dishwasher is an upgrade from what I have now – here in the apt. AND the house – and it’s supposed to be quiet. Hey I just want it to work.
I cooked dinner and he’s watched Monsters, Inc., Chicken Little, and now Zathura. It’s a lazy day and I figured if he wants to watch movies all day, I’d let him. I’ve been packing boxes off an on and we’d play with this new walkie-talkies while I’m in the other room. I did a little cleaning so I don’t have to kill myself when it does come time to move.
Oh and I put in my notice, so now I have to move. It’s rather scary but I’m looking forward to getting into the house. I have lots to do between now and then. After this week calms down I’m going to start calling the utilities and getting them set up for transfer and then I have to visit the city and get my water account all set up. The day i close I’m planning on going straight to Best Buy and purchasing my appliances and set up the delivery dates. THEN I’m calling Directv and getting that set up for delivery and installation…
Have I written a word? No. I did do second round of edits on Ransom & Fortune and I need to take one more look at it before I send it back to the editor. Sometime between packing and moving I’d like to finish Nice Girls Do. I have two newsletters to put together before Tuesday. One bright spot for sure – gas has goen down about $0.30 which means my gas bill has gone down and I love that.
Okay I’m sure if you’re reading this, you’re bored out of your skull. I’m going to go watch the movie with my kiddo and then I’m going to put him in the tub and get him ready for bed. It’s time to start winding down the day. Tomorrow is our last day of the weekend and I have no clue what we’re going to do. Maybe if it stays cool, we’ll go to the park.
Well I best go. Apparently we’re being invaded by Zorgons (and if you’ve seen the movie, then you know what I’m talking about… haha)
Happy Labor Day, all. 🙂
Wow girl, sounds like you’ve got a lot on your plate, and your mind. If I’ve learned one thing over the last few months, it’s the importance of slowing down – even for 15 minutes and listening to your body. If it’s a lazy day, so be it. You deserve it. I’m so excited for you girl – you’re going to have your own little “Under The Tuscan Sun” house! haha. Beware of owls.
Have your lawyer negotiate a few thousand off the price. That’s why you have an inspection — the offer contract is very specific that the offer is only good as far as the inspection, and then it gets renegotiated.
Ditto to what Devon said and goodluck.:coffee:
Your agent should know how to negotiate with the buyers – its her job. You may have her try to have them fix what needs to be fixed so thats less money out of your pocket up front. Just a thought.
I love that movie ‘Under the Tuscan Sun’ and have been trying to get to blockbuster to rent it.
That’s not a bad idea…I mean, the inspector found problems with our house’s water heater and misc. things, and the owners had to FIX them before we moved into the house.
My kids were TERRIFIED of the Zorgons…in the theatre!
Wow you’ve been pretty busy… Congrats again on the house… I’m so happy for you!! I’m sure you’ll get everything taken care of and you’ll be so happy when you finally get moved in.
