I Had to Share This Song (Because It’s Unfairly Swoony)
Sometimes a story doesn’t stay on the page.
Sometimes it follows you around. Gets under your skin. Refuses to behave.
That’s what Dark Night of the Soul has been doing to me—and somehow, in the middle of writing it, a song happened.
The song is called “Cross That Line.”
And listen… it is dangerously swoony.
I didn’t sit down intending to write a song. I was circling a particular moment in the book—one of those quiet-but-devastating realizations where everything clicks into place. Where a character understands not just what someone has done, but why.
The line that broke me was this:
And if the Brotherhood thought they could force me to choose between my past and her future—
I would show them just how far I was willing to go to ensure she never had to make that choice herself.
I intended to cross that line.
That’s not anger.
That’s not rebellion.
That’s decision.
And apparently my brain said, Cool cool cool, we’re turning that into a song now.
Devotion, But Make It Dangerous
“Cross That Line” is written in the voice of a man who has already weighed the cost and paid it in advance.
He’s not posturing.
He’s not asking permission.
He’s not even asking to be understood.
He knows exactly where the line is.
And he crosses it anyway—so she doesn’t have to.
That’s the kind of devotion that hits different. The kind that isn’t loud or flashy, but quietly lethal. The kind that says, You stay out of this. I’ve got it.
Which, yes. Is deeply, unfairly attractive.
Why This Song Felt Like a “Must Share”
I share a lot of behind-the-scenes things with readers—snippets, vibes, inspirations—but this one felt special because it captures something that’s hard to explain in a blurb or even a scene summary.
This song is about:
-
choosing someone without making it their burden
-
crossing moral lines not for power, but for protection
-
carrying the weight alone so someone else can breathe
It’s romantic, yes.
But it’s also about love as an act of defiance.
And that’s very much the heart of Dark Night of the Soul.
Consider This Your Official Warning
If you like:
-
devoted heroes
-
morally gray choices made for the right reasons
-
men who don’t say I’d burn the world for you but quietly do it anyway
…then yeah. This song is going to get you.
I couldn’t keep it to myself. I had to share it with you.
Because some things are too swoony not to pass along. 🖤
PS: This song exists because Dark Night of the Soul refuses to leave me alone—and honestly? I’m not mad about it. If you’ve been following this story, you’ll recognize the moment immediately. And if you haven’t yet… consider this your invitation.
(Also: you’ve been warned.)
