She is not standing in the flower shop whispering, “At last, my supernatural purpose.”
No.
Piper is overwhelmed. Skeptical. Grieving. Frustrated. And very much wondering why no one bothered to mention the whole portal-and-monster situation earlier.
Reasonable, honestly.
She left Hickory Hollow years ago. She built a life away from the town. She thought distance meant she had escaped the expectations, memories, and complications of home.
But home has a way of calling you back.
Especially when home is sitting on a magical Crossroads and things are starting to go very wrong.
The Inheritance She Never Asked For
Piper inherits three things from Alice: A house. A flower shop. A destiny.
Two out of three would have been plenty.
The flower shop is more than a business. It is tied to the old magic of Hickory Hollow. It is part of Alice’s legacy, part of the town’s protection, part of the hidden world Piper never fully understood.
And the Guardian role? That’s not symbolic. The Guardian protects the Crossroads. Watches the gates. Keeps dangerous things from crossing into the human world.
Alice did it for years.
Now Piper has to decide whether she can.

She doubts. She questions. She resists. She grieves. She gets angry. Good.
That’s where the best kind of courage begins.
Not in the absence of fear, but in the choice to keep going anyway.
Piper’s strength is not about being perfect. It is about learning to trust herself, to stand her ground, and to accept that maybe the life she thought she left behind still has something to offer her.
Maybe home is not a trap. Maybe destiny is not a cage. Maybe love is not another reason to run.

Of course, Piper is not facing all of this alone.
Owen McAllister is waiting in Hickory Hollow.
Childhood friend. Longtime admirer. Very inconveniently wonderful.
Owen knows more about the town’s magic than Piper does. He understands the Crossroads, the danger, and the legacy Alice left behind.
But more than that, he understands Piper.
He sees her fear without mistaking it for weakness. He offers help without trying to take over. He believes she can become the Guardian before she fully believes it herself.
That is my favorite kind of hero.
Not the man who saves the heroine from her destiny.
The man who stands beside her while she claims it.
