This weekend went by fast! And now we’re approaching the middle of the month. Already? Sheesh.
Saturday I had my RWA meeting and the really awesome Sophie Jordan came to speak to us. She’s the author of the YA Firelight and if you haven’t read it, then I highly recommend it. It’s a fantastic book! She talked about career building and a lot of what she said really struck home for me. She’s probably one of the nicest people I’ve met. Incidentally, she got her start by winningthe 2005 Winter Rose contest (the contest I have been coordinating for the last few years), got the agent read (the grand prize), got signed with the agent, and then sold shortly thereafter. She also writes paranormal as Shari Kholer and historical under the Sophie Jordan name. There is a reason why our contest is one of the top ten in RWA. That is a prime example. ๐ It’s a beautiful, inspirational story.
So I did a lot of thinking this weekend about my own direction. Where I’m going. How I’m going to get there. I’m still not exaclty sure what the answer is. At lunch, we talked about Game of Thrones, the show and the book, and I mentioned to Sophie that I’ve always wanted to write a big, sweeping epic fantasy. She said now might be the time with the popularity of Game of Thrones. Fantasy is seeing a resurgence in popularity. I think she might be right. And I’ve had this half-written idea for an epic fantasy for about ten years now. Something about it had really never quite seemed to work. As I was drifting off to sleep last night, it hit me. I knew what I had to do with the story (at least for the first book) and where it would go. It took all my strength not to jump up and start writing. Instead, that’s what I’m doing today. ๐
I also ran a bunch of errands this weekend and cleaned the house. Thrilling stuff, that.
Hope everyone had a great weekend. Today I have more errands (post office, bank) and then I’m finally getting my hair cut. I’m in desperate need (and so is the kiddo – so I’m getting his cut, too).
Happy Monday!
Have a great writing week!
I’ve heard so much about THRONES, but I haven’t watched it. I have a major list of “to watch” and “to read” (and “to write,” waaahhhh) for AFTER the move, and it’s on it!”
Happy writing!
