This Book Has Taken Over My Life

I didn’t plan to write a blog post about Dark Night of the Soul. But then again… I didn’t plan for this book to completely take over my writing life either.

This story has lodged itself in my brain in a way I can’t escape. It’s there when I wake up. It’s there when I’m trying to work on literally anything else. It’s there at night, whispering just one more scene when I should absolutely be sleeping.

And the worst (best?) part?

It’s wrecking me.

Dark Night of the Soul is a story about what happens when love becomes an act of defiance—when choosing someone means burning down everything else.

And it’s asking things of me as a writer I didn’t fully expect.

It’s asking questions about loyalty. About devotion. About what it costs to love someone when the world is very determined to break you apart. About faith—not the easy kind, but the kind that survives betrayal and still chooses to stand.

I keep thinking I’ve reached the emotional bottom of this story.

And then it pulls me under again.

Some stories don’t simply want to be written. They demand it. They rearrange your priorities. They hijack your schedule. They leave you staring at the screen thinking, Well. That hurt. Guess I’d better keep going.

This one is that kind of story.

There’s a moment in the book that still echoes in my chest every time I reread it:

I’d buried that man centuries ago. When the world had taken everything from me.
And the world was trying to do that again.

But I could be that man again.
For her.

That’s the heart of this book. Not plot. Not lore. Not even the magic.

Choice. Devotion. Defiance.

So if you’ve noticed that I seem completely consumed right now—why everything circles back to Dark Night of the Soul—this is why.
