Hickory Hollow looks like the kind of town where everyone knows your name, your coffee order, and probably what you bought at the bakery last Tuesday.

It has flower baskets. Charming storefronts. Neighbors who absolutely know your business. The kind of small-town warmth that makes you want to linger.

But beneath all that cozy charm, something ancient hums at the edge of the road.

Because Hickory Hollow is not just a small town.

It is a Crossroads.

And Crossroads are never as harmless as they look.

A Town With Secrets

In Petals & Portals, Piper Wakefield returns to Hickory Hollow after the death of her Aunt Alice.

She expects grief. Memories. An inherited house. A flower shop. Maybe some awkward conversations with people who still remember exactly who she was before she left town.

What she does not expect is magic.

Or monsters.

Or the discovery that her aunt was not simply the beloved local florist.

Alice was the Guardian of the Crossroads.

Her job was to protect the town, guard the magical highway, and keep dangerous things from slipping through the veil.

And now that responsibility has passed to Piper.

Which is rude, honestly.

A person should at least get a manual before inheriting a supernatural destiny.

The Flower Shop

I love the idea of a flower shop as a magical anchor.

Flowers already feel enchanted to me. They hold memory. Emotion. Apology. Celebration. Grief. Romance. Hope. All the things we sometimes struggle to say out loud.

So giving Piper a flower shop felt perfect.

It is beautiful, but not fragile.
Ordinary, but not powerless.
Rooted in the town, but connected to something much older.

The shop becomes more than a business. It is a legacy. A threshold. A place where magic has been tended quietly for years.

And now Piper has to figure out what that means.

Preferably before something with claws comes through the gate.

No pressure.

The Magical Highway

One of my favorite parts of this new series is the idea of a magical highway.

I love portals. Always have. There’s something delicious about a road that does not simply take you from one town to another, but from one world to the next.

In Hickory Hollow, the magical highway is tied to the Crossroads. It brushes against other realms, other paths, other dangers.

Most people in town have no idea what waits just out of sight.

But the Guardian knows.

Alice knew.

And now Piper has to learn.

The problem, of course, is that the gates are weakening. The things on the other side are restless. And Piper has inherited a job she never trained for, in a town she thought she had left behind for good.

Coming Home Is Complicated

At its heart, Petals & Portals is a story about coming home.

Not the easy, postcard version of coming home.

The complicated kind.

The kind where old grief waits in familiar rooms.
The kind where people remember who you used to be.
The kind where love, regret, duty, and memory all meet at the front door.

Piper left Hickory Hollow for a reason. Coming back is not simple for her.

But sometimes home is not just the place you return to.

Sometimes it is the place that calls you back because there is something only you can do.

Something only you can protect.

Something only you can become.

And Then There’s Owen

Of course, it would not be a Michelle Miles book without romance.

Enter Owen McAllister.

Childhood friend.
Longtime admirer.
Very possibly the kind of man who has been quietly in love for years and is trying very hard to be normal about it.

Bless him.

Owen is steady where Piper is overwhelmed. He knows more about the town’s magic than she does, and he is willing to help her understand what she has inherited.

But he is not simply there to explain the supernatural situation.

He is there to remind Piper that she is not alone.

And if there is one thing I love in a romance, it is a hero who has been waiting—not passively, not helplessly, but faithfully—for the heroine to finally see the truth standing right in front of her.

Cozy Charm, Real Stakes

I think that’s what I love most about Petals & Portals.

It has the cozy fantasy elements I adore:

A flower shop.
A small town.
A magical inheritance.
A warm community.
A romance rooted in friendship and longing.

But it also has danger.

The gates are weakening.
The monsters are real.
The Crossroads need a Guardian.
And Piper has to decide whether she will run from the destiny she inherited or stand her ground and protect the town that shaped her.

It is charming.

It is magical.

It is a little dangerous.

Which is exactly how I like it.
