Why I Returned to the Dream Walker World

There are some stories you think you’re finished with.

Not because you stopped loving them. Not because they stopped mattering. Not because the characters went quiet in some neat, convenient, author-approved way.

But because you reached the end of the books you planned. You wrote the battles. You broke hearts. You healed what you could. You gave your characters their hard-won ending, closed the file, took a deep breath, and said, Okay. That’s done.

That’s what I thought happened with the Dream Walker series.

I published Call of the Dark back in May 2020, and I believed in that book with my whole heart. I believed in Anna. I believed in Kincade. I believed in their impossible love story, their darkness, their danger, their secrets, and the war waiting beneath the surface of the world.

But publishing can be a strange beast.

Sometimes a book you love doesn’t immediately find the readers you hoped it would. Sometimes a series you poured your soul into feels like it’s whispering into the void. Sometimes you look at the numbers, the silence, the struggle to get visibility, and you wonder if maybe the world has moved on.

Or worse. Maybe it was never listening.

For a while, I honestly thought the Dream Walker series was finished.

Not creatively. Never creatively. Anna and Kincade have always owned a very specific, very dramatic piece of real estate in my brain. But from a career standpoint? From a publishing standpoint? I thought maybe their time had passed.

And then those two walked back into my head like they had never left.

Which is extremely on-brand for them, honestly.

Kincade did not ask permission. Anna certainly did not wait for an invitation. They showed up with unfinished business, old enemies, deeper wounds, and a war that was never as over as anyone wanted to believe.

And I realized something. The Dream Walker series wasn’t dead. It was only waiting.

The Story Wasn’t Finished

When I first wrote Anna and Kincade, I knew their romance was powerful. I knew it was dangerous. I knew it was built on trust, choice, survival, and devotion.

But the more I returned to their world, the more I understood that their love story had become something bigger than romance alone.

Their love is not a soft little subplot tucked safely between supernatural battles.

Their love is the battle.

The Brotherhood wants control. Anna wants truth. Kincade wants to protect the woman he loves without becoming the weapon his enemies made him. And the war wants to take everything from them.

That’s the heart of Dark Night of the Soul.

This book is not just “what happens next.”

It’s the reckoning.

It’s the moment when old sins come due. It’s the moment when the Brotherhood stops being a shadowy threat and becomes something intimate, psychological, and vicious. It’s the moment when Anna and Kincade have to face what survival has cost them—and what they’re willing to become to protect the future they barely dared to want.

And yes, because it’s me, there are ancient secrets, immortal warriors, supernatural danger, emotional damage, morally gray protectors, found family, and probably at least one moment where someone absolutely should have made better choices.

But at its core, Dark Night of the Soul is about love as defiance.

Not perfect love. Not easy love. Not love wrapped in a bow and politely behaving itself.

This is the kind of love that stands in the dark and says, No. You don’t get to have them.

Anna and Kincade Came Back Changed

One of the things I love most about returning to this world is that Anna and Kincade are not the same people they were at the beginning of Call of the Dark.

They’ve been through too much.

Anna has survived manipulation, violence, secrets, loss, and the kind of truth that rearranges your entire life. But she is not fragile. She never has been. She is sharp-edged, stubborn, brave, and absolutely allergic to being managed “for her own good.”

And Kincade?

Oh, Kincade.

He is still the immortal warrior. Still controlled. Still lethal. Still carrying two thousand years of blood, grief, and duty like it’s something he can simply endure through sheer force of will.

But loving Anna changed him. Not softened him, exactly. That man is not soft.

But love gave him something to fight for instead of merely something to fight against. It gave him a home. A future. A reason to want more than survival.

And that is exactly why the Brotherhood fears them.

Because Anna and Kincade together are not just powerful.

They are whole.

Why Now?

That’s the part that surprised me.

For a long time, I thought returning to Dream Walker would feel like going backward.

Instead, it feels like coming home with sharper tools.

I know more now. About writing. About publishing. About emotional stakes. About the kind of stories I most want to tell.

And I know this world better than I ever did before.

I know Walker Manor. I know the Brotherhood. I know the hidden war beneath the visible one. I know the cost of devotion. I know the shape of Kincade’s silence. I know the fire in Anna’s truth.

And now I know what comes next.

Dark Night of the Soul begins a new chapter in the Dream Walker universe, but it is rooted in everything that came before. The old wounds matter. The old battles matter. The old love matters.

Especially the love.
